The date, December 3, was chosen in memory of the Bhopal tragedy (India), which occurred in 1984. As a result of a gas leak from the Union Carbide chemical plant, thousands of people lost their lives, and the environment suffered long-term contamination. This disaster became a global symbol of the risks associated with the careless use of pesticides.

The main goal of this day is to draw attention to the problems caused by chemical use in agriculture and to inspire a global transition to sustainable and safe methods.
